Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

When the House passed its bad bills to expand offshore oil drilling, we asked you to tell your Senators to reject these ideas.  You responded with thousands of emails covering every Senator from every state!

Well, your passion came through as just moments ago, the Senate rejected S. 953, a bill that embodied most of the “drill, baby, drill” concepts from the bad House bills.  S. 953 would have expanded drilling to new areas in the Gulf and off the coast of Virginia.  It would have automatically approved any offshore drilling requests not reviewed by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management within 60 days, and it would have blessed the old environmental review process that led to BP’s oil disaster last year.

Thanks to your work, however, S. 953 won’t do any of those things.  This is a victory for the turtles, dolphins and shore birds who suffer from oil spills, and a victory for ocean champions like you!

For the oceans,

David Wilmot, Ph.D.
President and Co-Founder

Mike Dunmyer
Executive Director
