Today we are proud to announce that Samantha Campbell has been named the Chairman of our Board of Directors. She succeeds Rob Moir, Ph.D., who will remain on the Board as Chairman Emeritus.
“Samantha is the right choice to lead Ocean Champions at this critical time for ocean health,” said Dr. Moir. “She has excelled on the Board’s Executive Committee as an active part of the leadership team that has the organization poised for significant growth.”
“We’re thrilled to have Samantha step into this leadership position,” said David Wilmot, Ph.D., Ocean Champions President and Co-Founder. “In a short time, she has become a leader in ocean philanthropy, and is very well respected in the community. Her ability and ideas make her the ideal person to follow Rob Moir as our Chairman.”
“Samantha has been a guiding force on our Board for several years, and her creativity and energy will make her an incredible Chair,” added Mike Dunmyer, Ocean Champions Executive Director.
Samantha attended Syracuse University and earned a BFA in Advertising Design. She moved to San Francisco in 1995 to work as an Art Director for a Bay Area agency. In 2003, she began working for the Campbell Foundation (which was founded in 1998) as the Pacific Region Program Officer. In 2009, she became President of the Foundation, and is now responsible for all grant oversight, as well as the core operational functions of the Foundation. Samantha has served on the Ocean Champions Board of Directors since 2006, and also serves as a Trustee for the Monterey Bay Aquarium and as a member of The Ocean Foundation's Board of Directors.
"I am convinced that ocean issues are rising in importance in our country. Many folks understand how a healthy ocean contributes to a productive society," said Samantha. "It makes me proud to be a part of the effort that will ensure the prominence of ocean conservation in discussions that ultimately have an impact on the quality of life of all Americans."
Samantha succeeds Rob Moir, Ph.D., as Board Chairman. Dr. Moir, the Executive Director of the Ocean River Institute, and an influential educator and activist, was Ocean Champions’ founding Chairman in 2003, and has served in that role continuously. During his tenure as Chairman, Ocean Champions helped elect dozens of pro-ocean candidates to the U.S. Congress, and helped pass important legislation to protect ocean health.
“Ocean Champions would not be where it is today without Rob Moir’s inspiration, leadership and support,” said David Wilmot. “We feel very fortunate that he will continue to serve on the Board as Chairman Emeritus and on the Executive Committee.”
