Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

Every good team constantly works to get better, and our approach to building a more pro-ocean congress is no different.  There are currently 32 ocean champions serving in Congress, 19 in the House and 13 in the Senate.  Today, we set out to make that strong ocean team even stronger by endorsing Jared Huffman in the race for California’s second district.

Mr. Huffman has been an Assemblyman in the California state legislature since 2006, and has compiled an incredible record on ocean issues.  Most recently, he co-authored AB 376, a bill banning the possession, sale and distribution of shark fins in California.  This landmark conservation bill has passed the Assembly and is moving in the state Senate.  In addition, Mr. Huffman’s bill to end the harmful practice of fish poaching has been signed into law, and his bill to improve the Department of Fish and Game’s ability to protect wildlife has been passed in the Assembly and is awaiting action in the Senate.

Beyond his work on fish conservation, Mr. Huffman has introduced and passed measures to prevent oil spills in California state waters, stop sewage spills, and expand the use of renewable energy and energy efficient products. As Chair of the state Assembly’s Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee, he led the passage of an historic package of water reform.  He is known as one of the most effective and prolific lawmakers in the state, having passed 30 pieces of legislation in his first three years.

His passion for ocean and environmental conservation is a driving force in his life.  Before his run as a state legislator, Mr. Huffman was a senior attorney with NRDC, where he enabled an agreement to restore a 153-mile stretch of the San Joaquin River in California’s Central Valley, one of the largest river restoration projects in our nation’s history.

Assemblymember Huffman stated, “I am honored to accept the early endorsement of Oceans Champions for my congressional campaign. As a member of the State Assembly I have fought to protect our beaches and ocean life from oil and sewage spills and have worked tirelessly to keep our state parks open.  This new congressional district covers a vast area of California coastline and we must do everything we can to preserve it for future generations.  I will continue my efforts to protect this great natural resource as a member of Congress and I look forward to working with Ocean Champions in the future."

As we’ve gotten to know Mr. Huffman over the past few months, we’ve become more and more excited about his candidacy.  We are confident that he will be a great ocean champion in Congress, and we’ll be working hard to help him get there.
