Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

On July 19, 2010, President Obama signed an Executive Order establishing our first National Ocean Policy.  This policy is intended to align the work of the 20 Federal agencies with ocean jurisdiction around a mandate to balance the use of ocean resources with long-term conservation.  In January of this year, the National Ocean Council released its plan for implanting the Policy, outlining over 50 actions to protect and improve ocean and coastal habitat. 

This conservation-driven plan is open for public comment until next Monday, February 27th.  Organizations that extract ocean resources will certainly be commenting, and the Obama Administration needs to hear from ocean activists like you!  Please take some time to offer your thoughts on the plan and to support funding its implementation in three easy steps:
  1. Download and review the plan.  If you're pressed for time, you can check out the nine national priority objectives, and the NSF summary.
  2. If you’d like some guidance on comments, you can read (and cut / paste as you like) this draft letter from a coalition of ocean groups (including Ocean Champions) who support the National Ocean Policy.
  3. Click on this link to send your thoughts to the National Ocean Council.
With the right support, the National Ocean Policy can become a great tool for reforming ocean governance and improving the management of our precious ocean resources behind a conservation ethic.  Show the Obama Administration you support their plan for a healthier ocean.
