Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

Thanks to your support – thousands of letters were sent to Senators all across the country - the RESTORE Act was passed 76-22 in the Senate just moments ago!  RESTORE includes a number of great ocean policies.  It will:

  • Establish a Federal-State Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council
  • Establish a Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Science, Observation, Monitoring, and Technology Program
  • Provide $1.4 billion for the Land and Water Conservation Fund over the next two years
Most importantly, however, RESTORE includes the National Endowment for the Oceans, which will establish the first annual fund for ocean conservation. This will direct millions of dollars every year toward ocean health restoration projects such as those that protect and restore critical habitat, rebuild fisheries and drive research about critical ocean ecosystems.

The National Endowment for the Oceans was led by Senate ocean champions Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME), and Senate champion Bill Nelson (D-FL) provided significant leadership on RESTORE, making this a great example of why we need to keep electing ocean champions!

Thanks again for your incredible support.  Stay tuned as we’ll need you again as this measure moves to the House!

For the oceans,

The Ocean Champions Team

P.S. Help us fight to pass RESTORE and NEO in the House so that it can be signed into law.  Please give to Ocean Champions today.
