Late Tuesday night, Ocean Enemy #1, Congressman Steve Southerland introduced an amendment to block funding for any future "Catch Shares" programs. Catch Shares programs have helped threatened fisheries recover all over the world, and right off the shores of Congressman Southerland's own district! Healthy fisheries promote healthy ocean ecosystems, but Rep. Southerland seems to believe that there's no need to sustainably manage a fishery - even those his constituents depend on.
We worked hard to beat this bad amendment, and are pleased that nearly all our friends voted against it. Stalwart champions like Congressman Sam Farr (D-CA) and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME) also made impassioned floor speeches to rally Members against Southerland's ocean attack. This kept the vote close (220 – 191), but at the end of the day, there were too many bad ocean Congressmen in the House to overcome – it was simply an issue of unfavorable math.
This makes the point ever more clear: The only way to change the game for the oceans is to defeat guys like Congressman Southerland and prevent them from doing harm. Help us send this bad guy home by donating to our campaign to defeat ocean enemy #1, Steve Southerland.
We will now work hard to beat this bad measure in the Senate, and we believe we can. Until we defeat Congressman Southerland, however, his twisted attacks on our oceans will keep coming.
For the Oceans,
