Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

In the 112th Congress, partisan rancor has invaded the ocean policy debate, with party line votes hitting energy, fisheries management and other conservation issues. In these challenging times, we recognize the Members who stand up on ocean issues regardless of broader party trends, and today, we’re proud to endorse Congressman Leonard Lance (R-NJ-7).

Congressman Lance has often supported policies that protect coastal and ocean resources, sometimes going against the grain of his party:

  • He supports development of clean, renewable energies, because they benefit the environment and create new jobs while moving us away from reliance on foreign oil. Congressman Lance was one of only 8 Republicans to vote for the Waxman-Markey Climate bill, and has supported legislation to invest in R&D for renewable energy.
  • He supports innovative and effective fisheries management programs that achieve conservation goals by aligning them with the economic interests of fishermen.
  • Congressman Lance voted for cleaner coastal water by supporting the Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Act and the Clean Estuaries Act.
  • Congressman Lance also appreciates the importance of wildlife conservation, and has voted favorably on measures to protect sea turtles and sea otters, and cosponsored America’s Wildlife Heritage Act.

"I thank Oceans Champions for recognizing my record in Congress," said Lance.  "New Jersey's beaches and vibrant coastal communities are important components in our state’s economy.  That is why I have consistently voted to protect our oceans and beaches to help preserve and increase the robust New Jersey Shore tourism economy."

Healthy ocean policies should be a conduit for bipartisan agreement and cooperation. Congressman Lance embodies that ideal, and we’re glad to have him as an ocean champion.
