Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

There’s a lot going on in Tampa Bay these days – a competitive baseball team, the “Bohemian Bash”, and the Republican Convention. But the best thing going on in Tampa is Congresswoman Kathy Castor’s reelection campaign. Congresswoman Castor is one of our strongest ocean champions, and we’re delighted to endorse her once again.

Here's just a sample of Congresswoman Castor's great ocean resume:

  • She led the fight to hold BP accountable for the environmental and economic damage of its spill, and worked hard to ensure that the recently passed RESTORE Act directed 80% of the Clean Water Act fines to restoration and recovery of the Gulf Coast.
  • She has been a leader on opposing expanded drilling into the eastern Gulf and developing clean energy alternatives.
  • She’s a leader on improving Florida’s coastal water quality. She cosponsored and led the House passage of the 2009 Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Act, and is working hard to pass strong legislation to address these issues in the 112th Congress.
  • She fights for fish, voting against a bad anti-catch shares amendment in the recent budget bill.
  • She is a steadfast supporter of the National Ocean Policy.

“Ocean Champions understands that a healthy environment is key to a healthy Florida economy," said Castor.  "I am proud to have their support.”

Building political power for the oceans means protecting true champions like Kathy Castor. The Tampa Bay area and all our oceans are fortunate to have her voice in Congress.
