Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

What’s better than ONE ocean champion Senator from the Chesapeake Bay Region?

TWO ocean champion Senators! (Our logic is unassailable, no?)

Today, we’re proud to endorse Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Tom Carper (D-DE). Representing states that cover the Delmarva Peninsula, a broad swath of the Atlantic coast, and the Chesapeake Bay watershed, these two champions have built a great track record of ocean and environmental leadership.

Senator Cardin has been a leader on ocean, coastal and bay health issues throughout his career. As the Chairman of the Environment and Public Works Subcommittee on Water and Wildlife, he has authored laws to address polluted stormwater runoff, passed bills to preserve critical estuaries, and cosponsored a bill to address Harmful Algal Blooms and Hypoxic dead zones. The Senator is also addressing climate change by cosponsoring bills to catalyze clean energy development, and introducing another to enable communities to strengthen their water systems against the effects of extreme weather events.

“Marylanders understand the essential role that water and our oceans have in a healthy economy and healthy environment. I thank Ocean Champions for their great work. I’m proud to be a part of a nationwide effort to prioritize good science-based stewardship of American waters so that they can sustain native fish, wildlife and our coastal economies for generations,” said Senator Cardin.

Senator Carper is an outspoken leader on clean energy development and watershed conservation. As Delaware’s Governor, Carper enacted the Inland Bays Watershed Enhancement Act to restore and protect critical habitat. As Senator, he ascended to Chair the Subcommittee on Clean Air and Nuclear Safety, where he has championed offshore wind energy development and positioned Delaware to be a leader in this technology. He has also introduced legislation to restore and protect the Delaware River Basin. Senator Carper has also defended the Clean Air Act and the EPA’s ability to regulate harmful pollutants.

“I am grateful and humbled to be recognized for my work to protect our environment, particularly our oceans, and foster the development of new, clean American energy sources - like offshore wind -  that create good-paying, sustainable jobs, both in Delaware and across the country,” said Sen. Tom Carper.  “Many people like to claim that we must choose between a clean environment and job growth. I disagree. As one of the founding members of the Senate Oceans Caucus and chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Clean Air, I have seen firsthand the positive outcomes that stem from keeping stewardship of our natural environment in mind as we help create a nurturing economic environment for creating jobs and growing our economy. This is certainly true in Delaware, where today our world-class, clean beaches are a major driver of our local economy and where we hope one day in the near future to harness the wind to power our homes and businesses. I deeply appreciate this endorsement, and I will continue to advocate for growing our economy by protecting our environment.”
