The best Representatives are those who truly know their constituents, and today we’re celebrating a Member who has made staying connected a top priority. After winning her first election in 2007, Congresswoman Niki Tsongas (D-MA) opened four district offices to make it as easy as possible for constituents to contact her and get results. Today, she’s known for her dedication and deep understanding of her district.
Congresswoman Tsongas also maintains a home on Cape Cod, so she also knows the ocean, and has developed a deep emotional connection to it. This connection has informed the policy priorities that make her a champion for our oceans.
Congresswoman Tsongas is a long time supporter of the National Ocean Policy, recognizing that the challenges facing our oceans require the improved inter-agency coordination and stakeholder involvement that it provides. The Congresswoman has also worked to prevent damage from offshore drilling oil spills, having led an effort to require oil companies to prepare detailed plans for responding to a worst-case scenario before they could drill. Congresswoman Tsongas believes the best way to achieve energy independence while growing our economy is to invest in renewable energy technologies, many of which are well represented in her district.
"I am honored to receive the endorsement of Ocean's Champions - a leading and effective advocacy organization for our planet's oceans," said Congresswoman Tsongas. "In Congress, I've worked hard to protect our waterways, including the wild and scenic rivers of my district. I look forward to returning to Congress to continue to be a voice for those who share my commitment to the environment. I thank Ocean's Champions for their endorsement and support."
Niki Tsongas is a thoughtful leader who takes the time to fully understand ocean issues, and she’s become an important voice for ocean conservation on the House Natural Resources Committee.
