Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

Elections matter, and today we’re making endorsements in three races that represent a clear choice in the future of ocean policy.  We’re proud to endorse Carol Shea-Porter for NH-1, Patrick Murphy for FL-18, and Suzan DelBene for WA-1.

In 2010, Cong. Frank Guinta rode the Republican wave to defeat Carol Shea-Porter.  Since winning, he’s been a rubber stamp for the oil industry and big polluters, and has voted to block important fish conservation programs and sensible ocean policies.  We think it’s time to go “back to the future” and return former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter to D.C.  In her two terms in Congress, Shea-Porter earned a reputation as an environmental champion, and she’s anxious to return in order to undo the damage done by the current Congress.

In Florida’s 18th District, toxic algal blooms and fish kills in the St. Lucie River and its estuary are real threats to local quality of life as well as to human health.  Patrick Murphy, a diver and fisherman, will address these problems to protect clean coastal water.  He’ll also work to protect the local coastline from offshore oil drilling, a problem he learned about first hand when he led an effort to remove oil from the Gulf in the aftermath of the BP disaster.  Ocean champion Patrick Murphy will be a much better friend to Florida’s coastline than his opponent, Cong. Alan West.

Suzan DelBene knows that investing in clean, renewable energy is the best way to grow the economy while protecting our natural resources and establishing energy independence.  This is a critical consideration for Washington state, where greenhouse gas-driven ocean acidification is threatening the state’s oyster farming industry and its 3,200 jobs.  Her opponent has no new ideas in this area, advocating heavy reliance on coal and oil despite the impact on the Washington’s environment and the jobs that depend on it.  Here again, the choice is clear.
