Dear Friend, As you know, we set out in 2012 to take back Congress for our oceans. We’ve campaigned to beat Rep. Steve Southerland (aka Ocean Enemy #1), and have stretched to elect 40 champions (aka Ocean Good Guys). And with the goal of electing 40 champions in mind, we’re proud to announce that our 47th and final 2012 endorsed champion is…(drum roll please)… Florida Senator Bill Nelson! Over the past six years, Senator Nelson has been a steadfast ocean defender. He’s led a bipartisan effort (along with Senator Olympia Snowe) to develop a national strategy with regional action plans for addressing Toxic Tides and Dead Zones, which kill fish and coral reefs while devastating coastal communities. He’s also led the fight against expanding offshore oil drilling, and was one of the main reasons that the recently passed RESTORE Act directed significant money toward coastal habitat restoration and not just economic restoration. While Senator Nelson’s performance was strong, we must note that this wasn’t an easy decision. His opponent, Congressman Connie Mack has also been an endorsed ocean champion, and has been an effective leader on several key ocean issues, including Red Tides. We have great respect for Congressman Mack and his staff and for all they’ve done for our oceans in the past. That said, participating in elections means you have to choose, even when it means choosing between good friends, and Senator Nelson’s overall record and future policy positions earn him the nod over Congressman Mack. With 46 endorsed champions running strong and our campaign against Ocean Enemy #1 in great shape, we’re well positioned heading into the election and ready to take back Congress for our oceans. Stay tuned as November 6th draws near! Elections matter,
P.S.Thanks for all your incredible support throughout the year! |
