Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

Since the 113th Congress was sworn in, we’ve been meeting with our champions to identify the best opportunities to help our oceans, and have come away energized and ready to roll.

First, we’ve been impressed with the early moves made by a number of our freshman champs.  From making excellent staff hires to establishing bipartisan collaborative partnerships, the incoming class of champions is already playing a smart game that will pay dividends for our oceans.

Second, our champions in leadership positions are teeing up a portfolio of good ocean bills with bright prospects, including:

  • Fighting illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and seafood fraud to better support sustainable fisheries
  • Reauthorizing and strengthening coral reef conservation programs
  • Researching, mitigating, and addressing ocean acidification

There’s also a lot of conversation about how to effectively engage on climate change!

This is why we work to elect ocean champions – without their leadership, these issues would never see the light of day.  And with 51 champs in Congress, this is just the beginning!

Thank you,

David Wilmot, Ph.D.
