Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

Late last night, in a roll call vote on the Floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, a number of our ocean champions helped lead the way to another ocean victory.

Joining forces with our friends and working closely with ocean colleagues with close ties to key Hill offices, the champions for healthy oceans and sustainable fisheries prevailed by defeating Ocean Enemy #1 - Congressman Steve Southerland - and his anti-catch shares amendment by a vote of 223-185!

Where to start? Ocean champions and senior appropriators Congressmen Fattah, Honda, and Schiff kept the amendment off of the bill in subcommittee, forcing Southerland to take it to the Floor for a vote from the full House.

On the Floor, ocean champion Congresswoman Pingree led the fight, where she was joined by champion Fattah and others to speak out in opposition.

Working behind the scenes, ocean champions Congressmen Crowley, Israel, Van Hollen and Congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz were joined by like-minded colleagues Congressmen Hoyer, Brecerra and others to convince colleagues to stand up for oceans and sustainable fisheries with a nay for Southerland.

At the vote, 54 Republicans joined 169 Democrats to help ensure the defeat of this anti-sustainable fisheries amendment. And, I am proud to note, 100% of our congressional ocean champions voted the right way and were a big part of moving this vote from a defeat in 2012 to an ocean victory in 2014.

To all of our champions - past, present, and future - and to our ocean colleagues throughout the ocean community, we offer our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for a job well done!

But, there's no time to rest. The Flores Amendment - preventing the use of Federal Funds for National Ocean Policy implementation - unfortunately did pass the House last night, and we'll need to again marshal the ocean forces and fight to have it stripped out when the House and Senate meet to iron out final differences.

And, with elections right around the corner, a number of our champions need our continued support and help to win their races and return to Congress to continue fighting for our oceans.

The battle for healthy oceans continues...

For the oceans,

David Wilmot, Ph.D.
