Dear Friend,To get people elected to Congress, who promote healthy ocean policies, we need engaged and informed citizens who vote.
Ocean Champions is excited therefore to, once again, participate and sponsor the Blue Vision Summit. We encourage you to join us. This biennial conference on ocean issues brings together hundreds of ocean activists and leaders from local, regional and national groups, as well as scientists and businesses, explorers and recreationists, youth and conservationists to identify key issues, share lessons learned, and build the public momentum for healthy oceans.
The Summit will highlight many critical issues, including an issue that continues to plague our seas: pollution. This year, I have organized a panel on ocean pollution, focusing on the threats of plastic and nutrient pollution. We will not just discuss the problem, but delve into the solutions that are being pursued. Joining me will be Marcus Ericksen, Co-Founder of 5 Gyres; Serge Medina, Founder of WildCoast, who recently upped his activist game by being elected mayor of Imperial Beach, CA; Adena Leibman, Plastics Initiative Manager at Ocean Conservancy; and a senior staffer on Capitol Hill who was instrumental in getting the Harmful Algal Bloom (HABs) legislation passed last year.
Central to the Summit’s success is the Healthy Ocean Citizen Lobby Day: the largest gathering of ocean activists on Capitol Hill. Whether this will be your first visit to Capitol Hill or you are an experienced lobbyist, your participation is critical. Click here to see how important it is for each of us to participate in Lobby Day. We have arranged for several of our ocean champions in Congress to kick-off the morning by sharing how important oceans are to them.
On the evening of May 13, Ocean Champions PAC is hosting a fundraiser for Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii, a leading advocate for healthy oceans and tireless fighter against pollution and other environmental threats, and for threatened and endangered ocean wildlife. Our goal is to have the most support from individual ocean lovers ever for any member of Congress. Even if you can only make a modest contribution, please join us to share with Senator Schatz the passion and energy we feel for protecting our oceans.

Capping the week’s activities will be the 8th annual Peter Benchley Ocean Awards. This evening ceremony will recognize and celebrate outstanding achievement that have lead to the protection of our coasts, oceans and the communities that depend on them. This year’s recipients are: HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco for Excellence in National Stewardship; Dr. Daniel Pauly for Excellence in Science, Secretary of State John Kerry for Excellence in Policy, The Economist for Excellence in Media, Madison ‘Pip’ Stewart (Shark Girl) for Youth Activism, Nainoa Thompson for Excellence in Marine Exploration, and Hero of the Seas Todd Miller & Dana Beach.
Can’t make it to the Summit this year? Share with us how you engage in ocean issues in your hometown.
Ocean Champions will continue to keep you informed of happenings on the Hill and around the country.
For the oceans,
