Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

The Final Wave Comes Ashore!

Today, we announce the last of our 2008 Endorsements, House candidates John Adler (D) and Linda Stender (D), both from New Jersey.  Adler and Stender share a strong commitment to protecting our oceans and elevating ocean health as a priority in Congress.

"Drilling for oil a few miles off of New Jersey is a mid-20th century response to a 21st century problem.  It will do nothing to reduce the cost of gasoline or our nation's carbon emissions, while polluting our beaches and restricting fishing in large stretches of our ocean."

- John Adler

John Adler is running to replace the seat of one of our ocean champions, Rep. Jim Saxton, which will be no easy feat.  Saxton's leadership on oceans and New Jersey's environmental issues have set a high standard for the candidates seeking to represent the district.  Named as one of New Jersey's ten top legislators by New Jersey Magazine, State Senator John Adler has a reputation for being "hardworking, incisive, and respected by both parties".  Adler serves on the State Environment Committee and has consistently fought against offshore drilling and spoken out against an offshore liquid natural gas facility.  Adler has earned the support of the Sierra Club and the New Jersey Outdoor Alliance, and deserves the support of Ocean Champions.

"We need an energy policy that lowers gas prices and ends our dependence on foreign oil, through investments in renewable energy sources and green technologies. We owe it to our children and grandchildren to leave them a cleaner, greener world."

- Linda Stender

Linda Stender has a real record of fighting for environmental protections. In the State Assembly, she wrote the New Jersey Global Warming Response Act - creating the nation's strictest reduction standards to curb global warming emissions. As a proven leader in the State Assembly we expect Linda to bring that commitment to the national level, following in the footsteps of Saxton, Lautenberg, Pallone and joining our other New Jersey champions in the fight to protect our oceans and coastal resources.

With 8 days left until the elections, it's never been more important to send ocean-friendly candidates to Congress.  We must work even harder than ever at protecting the oceans for the generations to come.   Please donate TODAY to ensure the election of ocean champions, and invite your friends, who share in the vision of healthy oceans for their children, to join us in this fight.

For the oceans,

The Ocean Champions Team

Why Are Ocean Champions Endorsements So Important?

When you consider that more than 53% of our nation's population resides on a highly abused 17% of our coasts, and only 5% of our nations political leadership champion ocean health; we think it's important to get more Ocean Champions elected.

Ocean Champions endorsements help to elect ocean-conscious Congressional leadership that will better represent our needs.  Our Congressional Champions work to protect waterways while recognizing the direct effect of the oceans' health on our families' health.

Our endorsements provide:

Campaign Funding- through Ocean Champions PAC.

Independent Campaigning - our unique 501(c)(4) structure positions us as the only ocean group that directly works to elect (and sometimes to defeat) members of Congress.  In 2006 we played a major role in getting rid of "Ocean Enemy #1", Rep. Richard Pombo (R-Ca.), by funding a door-to-door canvas in his district.

Social Networking Support -  (YAY YOU!)  Last year, you and your friends sent thousands of letters and calls of support to Ocean Champions Representatives and candidates who are working to move healthy ocean policy into action.  There is power in your voice.

Campaign Insight - Our unique bipartisan approach provides incredible social and scientific insight to members on both sides of the aisle.

With what is shaping up to be one of the most important election years of an era-it's never been more important to elect Ocean Champions who better represent our needs.
