Some New Year's just seem to slip by like calendar pages peeling off in the old black and white movies. But, not this year. This year is marked by a heightened level of anticipation the likes of which we may never experience again.
We inaugurated a new President who brings the hope and promise of a very different kind of leadership. We welcomed a regenerated Congress back into session. On a rare Sunday session, the Senate advanced legislation that would set aside more than 2 million acres in nine states as wilderness. In his final days in office, our ex-President set plans in place to protect 195,000 nautical miles of the Pacific Ocean.
Just last week, Ocean Champions joined ocean leaders in Annapolis at a 3 day workshop, organized by the Joint Ocean Commission Initiative (JOCI) and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where we worked at setting ocean priorities for the new administration and Congress. And, last Wednesday evening Ocean Champions co-hosted a reception on Capital Hill welcoming new members of Congress.
At this time, it has never been more important that we protect the 71% of our planet that provides our life support system. The oceans are the front-line defense of the destructive force caused by climate change. Now seems to be the time when America will show true leadership in the preservation of our natural resources-- in fostering a culture that places a higher priority on clean oceans and healthy coasts.
Please join us, especially at this unique time in our history, in protecting our oceans. Lets take full advantage of all we worked so hard for last November.
For the oceans,
The Ocean Champions TeamP.S. Don't forget to invite your friends along for what is sure to be an exciting year in protecting our oceans!
