The clock is ticking on the 111th Congress and a number of important ocean bills are sitting on the goal line, poised to score. One of the most important is the National Endowment for the Oceans, which would establish the nation’s first ever fund for ocean conservation. This important bill could direct as much as $1 billion each year toward ocean and coastal restoration.
A similar bill has already been passed in the House, and now we need the Senate to act. This bill was introduced by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and enjoys bipartisan support, including cosponsorship from fellow ocean champ, Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME). Please click on this link to contact your Senator, asking them to support S. 3641, the National Endowment for the Oceans Act.
Passing this bill is a long shot – the Senate may not move any legislation in the lame duck session – but a strong show of support could help encourage the right action. Tell your Senator to seize the day and pass a great bill that will protect fish, dolphins, turtles and yes, humans too! Healthy, thriving oceans sustain ocean life and coastal communities.
This is our last shot for 2010. Let’s make it count!
