The holidays are a time to reflect, and for the oceans, what a crazy year it’s been! There were certainly events that make you wonder what there is to be thankful for; BP’s Gulf oil spill was heartbreaking, and the subsequent failure to pass a climate bill in the Senate was confounding. And while those events are incredibly upsetting, it’s important to remember the positives that occurred, and for which we’re very thankful:
In a difficult election, 22 of our 26 endorsed champions won! These are America’s best ocean leaders, and they’ll keep fighting to protect what we all love.
Once again, we were able to beat Ocean Enemy #1, Richard Pombo!
We helped obtain the Nation’s first National Ocean Policy through Executive Order, and the Administration has begun assembling the structure to make it work.
Our champions worked to pass a number of strong ocean bills in the House, including our Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Act, a bill to end shark finning in U.S. waters, and a bill establishing the first ever national ocean conservation fund. All of these bills and more are alive in the Senate, and we’re working hard to pass them before year-end.
And through all the year’s ups and downs, we’re thankful to have you battling on the same team. Without your generosity, we wouldn’t be able to keep building and leveraging political power for the oceans. Thank you for all that you do!
David, Mike, Chris and the entire Ocean Champions Team
P.S. With good friends on both sides of the aisle going into 2011, Ocean Champions is well positioned to defend against attacks on our oceans, and to find pro-ocean opportunities as well. Please help us continue the fight by supporting Ocean Champions today.
