With the elections now over, Ocean Champions is turning its full attention to taking care of our oceans on Capitol Hill. While the landscape of opportunities and threats will evolve over the next couple months, a few things are certain right now:

• We have a couple weeks left in the 111th Congress to finish what we’ve started on several important initiatives, including cleaning up coastal water by fighting toxic algae and dead zones, rebuilding threatened fisheries and establishing the nation’s first ocean conservation fund. It’ll be tough, but we’re positioned well on all fronts.

• With key House committees likely to be run by Big Oil’s champions, we will face serious threats to our oceans through expanded offshore drilling, weakened environmental regulations, and attacks on sensible management of U.S. fisheries.

• Despite the threats there WILL ALSO be opportunities. Having built relationships with champions in both parties, we’ll be able to find them and take action.

It’s also certain that we’ll need your support to be successful. We’ve built strong relationships on Capitol Hill, but we’ll need an army behind us to repel the threats and to take action on opportunities to protect sensitive marine ecosystems and the animals that live there.
