Dear Friend, Today, the Obama Administration announced that it will NOT allow offshore oil drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico or off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts as part of the next five-year drilling plan. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar stated that the BP spill showed “…that we need to proceed with caution and focus on creating a more stringent regulatory regime.”Back when the BP catastrophe struck, we were heartened to see our champions leading the anti-drilling response. Several of them introduced legislation to ban drilling in critical areas, and many others pressed the Administration to rethink its policy. The real heroes, however, are all of you. Many great ocean activists joined this fight, and thousands, including all of you, sent emails to the President, your Senators and your Congressman/woman. The message from the ocean community and from ocean activists everywhere was loud and clear – no more new drilling. Today, President Obama and Secretary Salazar showed that they heard you and agreed! For the Oceans, The Ocean Champions Team P.S. Stay tuned, another important ocean issue you’ve supported – fighting toxic algae and dead zones - is well positioned in the Senate and may pass in the next couple weeks! |
