As you know, maintaining diverse, healthy populations of fish is critical to ocean ecosystems and to human survival. Unfortunately, there are almost 50 U.S. fisheries that are near the point of collapse. That’s why we are doing everything we can to Fight for Fish!
We’re battling big extractors who are trying to overturn a law we helped pass that mandated an end to overfishing this year. Repelling this attack is just one challenge. We also need to make sure that fish have healthy habitat, and that’s why we’re working in the Senate to stop Congressman Doc Hastings’ (R-WA) plan to expand offshore oil drilling to all U.S. coasts.
With your support we can win these fights, but if we’re going to save grouper, snapper, halibut, and all the iconic species of fish for future generations, we have to do more. We have to elect more lawmakers with the courage to stand up to special interests and protect fish for good!
Ocean Champions is the only ocean organization that does this, and we’ve helped to elect a diverse group of ocean advocates. Many were established Committee and Sub-Committee Chairs, or senior leaders. Others were just getting started when we helped them win their first primary (this helps build strong relationships). Now these champs are distancing themselves from their peers, enabling them to do more for the oceans.
A great example is Alaska Senator Mark Begich. Only two years into his first term, Senator Begich has become the Chairman of the Commerce Committee’s Oceans subcommittee. He is a GREAT Fighter for Fish and we’re thrilled to see his influence grow.
For the oceans,
P.S. We’ve identified a new rising star with the potential to become one of our strongest champions ever. We’ll announce this endorsement over the summer, so stay tuned!
