Since February of 2020, the Sikh Society of Minnesota and the Sikh Coalition have been working together to ensure that Sikhi is included in the state’s next K-12 Social Studies Standards and Benchmarks. This document determines what children learn in Minnesota’s public schools.
The third draft of the Standards and Benchmarks was released earlier this week. Sikhi is now included in the middle school section, but we are still missing from the high school section. There is also still no high school benchmark for studying religion as a part of modern identity rather than just a series of historical events.
Raising our voice is working, but we still have a little more work to do. Use this tool to submit one more public comment urging the Minnesota Department of Education to finish the job and fully include Sikhs! When you’re done, encourage your family and friends in Minnesota to send in their public comment.
Thank you for your continued efforts to make safer, more inclusive classrooms for our children and all the children of Minnesota.
This is a test - description.

This draft framework currently includes information about Sikhs in seven distinct areas. When completed, this framework will ensure that California students learn about Sikhism and Sikh contributions, thereby increasing appreciation for diversity and reducing ignorance of the sort that leads to bullying and bias.

March 5, 2012 (Washington, DC) – New York Congressman Joseph Crowley, in collaboration with the Sikh Coalition, is asking his colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives to sign a letter to the Justice Department, requesting that the FBI track hate crimes against Sikhs. Please contact your elected representatives today and ask them to sign the letter.
The federal government does not bother to track hate crimes against Sikhs in its Hate Crime Incident Report (Form 1-699). Such crimes are officially recorded as anti-Muslim crimes, even though Sikhs are usually targeted because of their Sikh identity. The Sikh Coalition believes that the only way to accurately diagnose and solve a problem is to track it. And so, if you agree that the federal government should be tracking anti-Sikh hate crimes, please sign our petition to the Justice Department today.
The U.S. Congress is considering a proposed law known as the Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA). According to some interpretations of federal law, employers with 'corporate image' policies can hide Sikhs from customers. In other words, some courts have effectively given employers permission to tell a Sikh that his or her face is not fit to be seen by customers and should be hidden in a backroom out of public view. The Sikh Coalition finds this offensive and contrary to the integrative purposes of civil rights law. We are trying to put an end to this modern-day version of the 'separate but equal' doctrine through direct outreach to our nation's leaders, and we now call upon you to spare a few seconds of your time and sign a petition letter to President Barack Obama, asking him to join the fight.

October 8, 2010 (Sacramento, California) – Almost two years after a Sikh job applicant won a legal battle against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), the office of California Attorney General Jerry Brown continues to vigorously oppose the right of Sikhs to work as state correctional officers. Jerry Brown's office takes this stance despite the recent vote by the California legislature to designate November 2010 as California Sikh American Awareness and Appreciation Month. We now need your help. Please sign our petition and tell the California Legislature to support civil rights and take a stand against the Attorney General's offensive decision to suppress the civil rights of California Sikhs.

The proposed law is called the Workplace Religious Freedom Act (WRFA), and it is critically important for Sikhs and all supporters of equal opportunity to urge Congress to pass WRFA without delay.

We request everyone to write to the Oregon legislature urging them to repeal ORS 342.650. This law effectively segregates Sikhs from being able to serve as public school teachers violating their basic civil and human rights.
Please draft your own language to the legislature or feel free to use the language we provide. Please also forward this link and ask your friends in Oregon to send e-mails to their legislators in Oregon ! It will make an enormous difference.
