  • AB1964 Will be Signed into Law in California Today

September 8, 2012 (Fremont, California) – California Governor Jerry Brown will be signing AB1964 into law today, marking a historic win for civil rights. This achievement ranks among the most far-reaching victories in the Sikh Coalition’s history. It will protect the civil rights of millions of Americans.

AB1964 was introduced last February by Assembly Member Mariko Yamada. The bill was first proposed to Assembly Member Yamada by the Sikh Coalition. It was then drafted and revised in direct partnership with the Sikh Coalition. The new law will promote equal employment opportunity for all workers in California, regardless of religion, and prevent job discrimination.

The new law prohibits segregation and strengthens the legal standard for religious accommodations in the workplace. California workers now enjoy the strongest protections against religious discrimination in the entire United States.

    In short, we made history.

These long-term game-changing victories are only possible with your financial support. We thank you for your support over the last eleven years and ask you to renew it today.

If you have not supported us financially to-date, we ask that you consider doing so today. Together we will improve the lives of generations of Sikh Americans to come.

The Sikh Coalition is grateful to Assembly Member Mariko Yamada and her staff for leading this effort; the West Sacramento Sikh Gurdwara; numerous organizational partners; Sikh Coalition Advocates Winty Singh, Harjit Kaur Grewal, and Meeta Kaur; and dozens of community members and volunteers, who testified at committee hearings, visited legislative offices, and sent over 4000 petition messages and postcards to lawmakers in support of AB1964.
