The Sikh Coalition Alert
September 12, 2012
  • Help the Oak Creek Community - Will You Attend the Hearing?

(New York, New York) September 12, 2012 – In the wake of the tragic, hate-motivated shootings in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, a United States Senate Subcommittee announced today that it will hold a hearing on threats posed by extremist hate groups in the United States. Today’s announcement was motivated in part by a request from a diverse group of more than 150 organizations, led by the Sikh Coalition, that the Senate hold hearings on hate crimes and domestic extremism.

The hearing, entitled “Hate Crimes & the Threat of Domestic Extremism,” will be held before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Human Rights, chaired by Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, Room 226, Washington, DC  starting at 2:30 p.m.

It is critical that the Sikh community turn out in full force at the hearing.

We strongly urge all Sikhs to honor the victims of Oak Creek by physically being at the hearing as a show of community strength to the United States Senate.

Please sign up here to let us know that you plan on attending the hearing.

Next week’s hearing provides an unprecedented opportunity for Sikhs to express their concerns and policy recommendations to the United States Senate. A Sikh witness from Oak Creek will testify at the hearing. To the Sikh Coalition’s knowledge, this is the first time ever that a Sikh will testify before the United States Senate on Sikh- American civil rights concerns.

It is imperative that the community come to the hearing to show its support. Again, we urge you to sign up here to let us know that you plan on attending the hearing.

The Sikh Coalition commends Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) for convening this historic hearing. As always, the Sikh Coalition urges all Sikhs to fearlessly practice their faith.
