Congress Needs to Hear Your Voice Now

March 1, 2013 (Washington, DC) – As law enforcement officials investigate last weekend’s brutal assault on a Florida Sikh as a possible hate crime, it is critical for Sikh Coalition supporters nationwide to contact members of Congress right now and urge them to endorse Congressman Crowley’s letter calling on the FBI to begin tracking hate crimes against American Arabs, Hindus, and Sikhs.

Thanks to your efforts so far, approximately 70 members of the House of Representatives have endorsed our campaign, but we can do much better. The modest changes that we are requesting will enhance the federal government’s ability to accurately diagnose and deter hate crimes, and expand awareness about our diverse communities among thousands of law enforcement officers.

Talking Points

Although petition letters are useful, phone calls to your Congressional offices are most effective. Notably, the Sikh Coalition received positive feedback about the politeness and professionalism of callers from Washington State, and we believe that the entire Sikh American community should follow their example. When you click on our petition link and insert your zip code, you will see a phone number for your elected representative in Congress. When you make the call, please request that your representative endorse Congressman Crowley’s letter calling on the FBI to begin tracking hate crimes against American Arabs, Hindus, and Sikhs. Here are some talking points to keep in mind:

  • Sikh Americans are repeatedly targeted for hate crimes, but the FBI does not track these incidents the way it does for other communities, such as Christians, Jews, and Muslims
  • According to Sikh Coalition surveys in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area, approximately 10 percent of Sikhs have experienced physical violence or property damage because of their Sikh articles of faith
  • It is impossible for law enforcement officials and policymakers to understand and address violence against our communities unless the problem is tracked and measured
  • Hate crime targets, including those who lost their lives in Oak Creek, deserve the dignity of recognition and deserve to be counted

The following members of Congress have endorsed our campaign. We encourage you to thank them for their support. In addition, pleas share our petition with your friends at your local Gurdwara and through your interfaith networks:
