Job Title: Community Development Manager
Location: Sikh Coalition National Office, New York City

POSITION SUMMARY: The Community Development Manager will be charged with mobilizing the Sikh community to broadly engage in their local civic life and institutions. A successful candidate must be able to effectively communicate with a broad range of constituents and mobilize the Sikh community to advocate for their rights and work with government agencies to ensure their rights are respected.

The ideal candidate will: strongly relate to members of the Sikh community, have an outgoing personality, be achievement oriented, gain the trust of community elders and adults, and be able to effectively engage various city and state government officials, all with the aim of ultimately empowering the Sikh community to be advocates for their rights. The candidate should be able to manage their own work and garner volunteer support to extend their inroads in the community. The candidate will be expected to work with volunteers and staff of the Sikh Coalition to achieve the objectives of the position and the organization overall.

Primary responsibilities of the Community Development Manager include:

  • Program Development and Implementation:
    • Training youth members in leadership development through youth organizing, advocacy and social justice education
    • Developing and launching advocacy campaigns through media, government and community engagement
    • Creating a safe environment and platform for Sikh youth to express their experiences with hate violence and bullying
    • Expanding programming throughout the Tri-State area (NY, NJ, CT)
  • Community Relations:
    • Establishing working relationships with Sikh and non-Sikh community organizations, media and government officials to support programmatic work
    • Engaging with local Gurdwaras to build communities of Sikh artists and activists
  • Programmatic Development and Management:
    • working closely with and reporting to the Sikh Coalition’s Executive Director, leading the development of yearly goals and activities and long-term strategic planning
    • building and maintaining strategic networks and partnerships
    • overseeing the recruitment, development and management of fellows and volunteers


  • A commitment to social justice and a strong interest in social justice education and community empowerment.
  • Fluency in Punjabi and English required.
  • Previous experience working in social justice, particularly youth organizing.
  • Previous experience in workshop development and facilitation.
  • Strong verbal skills and ability to write effectively required.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple tasks.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, Excel, email, web) required.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
