August 7, 2013 (New York, NY) - As the school year rapidly approaches, several resources are available for teachers and Sikh parents to use to explain Sikhism. Groups like Little Sikhs, the Lohgarh Foundation, and the Surat Initiative have created educational resources to help promote awareness and understanding for all age groups—from pre-school to college–about the Sikh American community.
My First Sikh Books – The My First Kaur Book and My First Singh Book, which can be ordered here, are ideal for pre-school students. The Sikh Coalition and the Lohgarh Foundation have created supplemental materials to these books to help your child’s teacher introduce his/her pre-school class to Sikhism.

“How to Tie a Patka” Handout – The Sikh Coalition has partnered with Little Sikhs to create a helpful handout showing how to tie a patka. This handout is ideal for use in classrooms to help demystify the patka and kesh for teachers, students, and parents alike. If you have a patka-wearing child, this is the perfect way to explain to his teacher how she/he can re-tie his patka, should it come loose during the day.

The Surat Initiative’s Turban Day Package – We can’t leave out the college students! The team at the Surat Initiative have created a resource for those looking to organize a Turban Tying Day at their university. In this package, you will find guidance on how to put together a successful Turban Tying Day, educate other college students on the significance of the turban, and spread an appreciation for Sikhism on campus.

As always, informational posters and brochures are available for download and/or request from the Sikh Coalition.
“Who are the Sikhs” Posters – These posters can provide your community with an overview of basic Sikh beliefs and fun facts about Sikh Americans. In the past, they have been displayed in public libraries, interfaith organizations, and in classrooms as a way to introduce students to Sikh Americans.
To request a poster-size print, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your name, address, quantity, and the place you intend to display the poster(s).
“The Sikhs” Brochures – These brochures are essential resources to keep handy and distribute to those who are curious about Sikhism. Recently, the Sikh Student Association at the University of Michigan used them for an event on campus—Bhavneet Singh Grewal, a board member of the SSA, said that the brochures “were great tools to explain Sikhism to people of all ages.”
To request brochures (available in 11 languages), please email email@example.com with your name, address, quantity, and language.
