  • How You Can Help the U.S. Congress Continue to Pay Attention

October 31, 2014 (Washington, DC) – Thirty years ago today, in 1984, the Indian government organized the mass killing of Sikhs in New Delhi. Thirty years later, the survivors continue to seek justice.

Four weeks ago, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the White House, the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission in the U.S. Congress hosted a Congressional briefing on the November 1984 anti-Sikh massacres. This briefing was the first of its kind on the Hill in 30 years.

The briefing sent a powerful message that human rights must be prioritized along with trade and defense in the India-U.S. strategic partnership. To ensure that this message is heard by policymakers, we encourage you to share the briefing video with your Members of Congress.

Another critical way to get Members of Congress and other decision-makers to focus on this issue is to draw their attention to the Op-Ed pages covering the topic. In just the past 24 hours, our staff and board have published three pieces in nationally syndicated outlets raising the profile of the 30th anniversary of the anti-Sikh pogroms. We urge you to post this content online and include these Op-Eds when you share the briefing video with your elected official.

For your additional convenience, here are short previews from the briefing.

Please share these videos and Op-Eds as widely as possible with your family, friends, and elected representatives. As the survivors of 1984 continue their struggle for justice, it is important for the rest of us to spread the truth about what happened to their loved ones.
