  • Hundreds of Californians Take On Sikh Awareness This Month

November 18, 2014 (Fremont, CA) - California Sikhs are positioning themselves well this year to be a significant voice in the nation. For the past several weeks, across the state of California, the Sikh Coalition has joined efforts with community members to recognize Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month, a resolution that was passed earlier this year by California State Legislature. California is the only state in the nation to pass a month long resolution recognizing and celebrating contributions of Sikh Americans.

Hundreds of Californians, taking inspiration from a list of projects provided by the Sikh Coalition, have organized events, led presentations and engaged with the media this month. Here are just a few examples of actions taken by the community for Sikh Awareness Month:

    Video

    • The Sikh Coalition, in collaboration with the Fresno County Office of Education, has developed a 10-minute Sikh Awareness video. In the coming weeks, the video will be shown across 32 school districts in Fresno County, representing 200,000 students.

    In-Person Presentations and Library Displays
    • In the first part of the month, the Sikh Coalition has already delivered presentations for close to 700 individuals at various schools, workplaces, law enforcement agencies and community events across the state.
    • Over a dozen libraries have displayed Sikh books, posters and other educational information in both public and school libraries throughout the state reaching hundreds of Californians.

    Resolutions
    • 11 Sikh Awareness and Appreciation resolutions have been passed by the City of San Jose, City of Elk Grove, City of Lathrop, City of Tracy, City of Modesto, City of Manteca, City of Ceres, City of San Joaquin, the Fresno County Office of Education, Elk Grove Unified School District and California State University, Fresno.

    Media and Government Engagement
    • NPR’s Northern California affiliate, KQED, showcased a story about Sikh American women.
    • Members of the American Sikh Congressional Caucus in California and other elected officials have shared information with their constituents about Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month.

    Community Events
    • The Sikh Coalition has worked with the community on various projects including a book reading at San Jose Public Library, a teacher’s event for Bay Area educators, a student and parents night at San Jose Gurdwara, a film screening and community discussion in Fresno and a presentation at the Sikh Council of Central California’s annual Sikh Awareness event.

California Sikhs, there is still time for you to be involved! Together we will educate millions of our non-Sikh neighbors about Sikhism this month.
