November 24, 2015 (Fremont, CA) – For the fourth consecutive year, California passed a statewide resolution (ACR 37) recognizing November as Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month. For the fourth consecutive year the Sikh Coalition is working tirelessly to maximize this opportunity to reach millions of Californians.
For the past three weeks, across the state of California, the Sikh Coalition has joined with public officials, local governments, South Asian media outlets and hundreds of community members to raise Sikh awareness and education.
So far, Sikh Awareness and Appreciation resolutions have been passed in San Jose, Santa Clara, Milpitas, Sacramento, Elk Grove, Marysville, Fremont and Yuba City, while the Sikh Coalition has delivered presentations to hundreds of Californians across the state.
“As Sikh Awareness Month 2015 draws to a close, we are reminded that hateful rhetoric must be answered with information and education every day of the year,” said former California state assembly member Mariko Yamada. “Let us replace fear with facts, and demagoguery with dialogue, recommitting ourselves to the highest ideals of this great nation.”
In addition to co-hosting a “Sikh Awareness and Appreciation” game with the Los Angeles Clippers on November 14th, the Sikh Coalition also partnered with Inkquisitive Illustration to leverage art to educate the public about Sikhs.
In 2013, the Sikh Coalition reached over three million Americans during Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month and followed that up in 2014 by reaching five million Americans.
“The community support and engagement across California has been incredible this month,” said the Sikh Coalition’s California Community Development Manager, Harjit Kaur. “With one week left we are excited about finishing strong and are on track to reach even more Americans."
