  • Report Hate: A New Tool To Combat Bigotry

February 2, 2016 (Washington D.C.) – Today the Sikh Coalition launched Report Hate (www.reporthate.org), a new online tool for community members to document incidents of harassment, discrimination and hate violence. The Sikh Coalition developed this tool to make it easier for Sikhs to document hate incidents, even if they are not legally actionable or a crime. This reporting tool is easily available on your phone and computer and is also open to non-Sikhs from all backgrounds based in the United States.

“America belongs to all of us,” said the Sikh Coalition’s Law and Policy Director, Arjun Singh. “Data drives change and victims of bigotry and hate violence should document and report their mistreatment through this new tool.”

The Sikh Coalition intends to use this information to better identify the types of bigotry Sikh Americans face as well as the geographic areas where Sikh Americans are acutely vulnerable. This enables us to better target our outreach efforts to law enforcement, educators, and community leaders and gives even better data to push for increased government resources and action at the local, state and federal levels.

Last month, Parminder Singh, a turbaned and bearded Sikh truck driver, was driving across the country with his family when he stopped at a rest stop near Knoxville, Tennessee. In the parking lot, another truck driver angrily shouted, "Why did you come here? Go back to where you came from!" Mr. Singh called the police and contacted the Sikh Coalition.

"This type of incident is something many Sikh American families in the United States have experienced at some point over the past 15 years," said Mr. Singh. "However, these verbal attacks almost never get reported. The new Report Hate resource now allows this incident to become an important data point that highlights the much bigger problem of hate in America."

All personal information reported through Report Hate will be kept strictly confidential. The form is for informational purposes only and does not constitute a request for legal assistance or create an attorney-client relationship with the Sikh Coalition.

The release of this online tool follows last week’s release of a hate crime poster, which details what community members should do if they are a target or witness to hate violence. The poster joins an array of new resources for community members, educators and law enforcement officials designed to combat hate.

View the hate crime poster here, which we are mailing to gurdwaras across the country.

During this period of increased anxiety, we urge Sikhs to exercise extra vigilance and caution. Please notify law enforcement of any threats or violence, and contact the Sikh Coalition at 212-655-3095 or online here.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
