  • [Know & Act] Protect Your Children At School

March 17, 2017 (New York, NY) - Over the years, the Sikh Coalition has developed several resources to protect our children from bullying. We encourage you to share these resources with school officials and other parents to ensure that all of our nation’s children enjoy a safe and healthy learning environment.

According to StopBullying.gov, a federal government website, examples of bullying include making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and intentionally excluding someone from a group. Over the years, Sikh children nationwide have told us they experience bullying at school because of their Sikh identity.

Although most school districts in the United States have policies that prohibit bullying, there is a risk that these policies are not being implemented properly. That is why it is so important for parents to develop relationships with their school officials and hold them accountable.

There are several steps that parents can take to prevent bullying.

    1. Share Bullying Fact Sheet with Your Gurdwara – The U.S. Department of Justice previously created a fact sheet -- both in Punjabi and in English -- that explains federal laws related to bullying. Please ask your gurdwara to circulate this document to your sangat.

    2. Share Resources with Teachers and School Principals – The Sikh Coalition has several free bullying prevention resources on our website that can be shared with school officials. We recommend that you review these resources and share them with teachers, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), and the principal at your school.

    3. Report Bullying to the Sikh Coalition – If your child experiences bullying at his or her school, please contact the Sikh Coalition for free assistance by emailing legal@sikhcoalition.org. We can speak to you confidentially and discuss the best options for keeping your children safe.

The Sikh Coalition will continue to share resources in the coming weeks and months, and we welcome your ideas and feedback for making our community more resilient. We recently shared information on gurdwara security and reporting hate incidents.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
