April 25, 2017 (New York, NY) - The Sikh Coalition is committed to protecting the right of Sikhs to practice their religion in the workplace. Over the last 15 years, we have successfully taken legal action against private companies and government agencies that discriminated against Sikhs. For example, we have protected the right of Sikhs to wear turbans, wear kirpans, and maintain unshorn hair and beards.

    Know Your Employment Rights

If you are an employee or job seeker, federal and state laws offer protections against employment discrimination. If you believe you have been fired, denied a job or harassed because of your race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age or disability, you have the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). In general, these complaints must be filed within 180 days, so it is important to take action as soon as possible. Failure to take action on time may lead to your claim being barred. The EEOC will attempt to investigate and resolve your complaint.

TAKE ACTION – Spread the Word and Speak Out

There are several steps you can take to prevent employment discrimination.

    1. Share Information at Your Gurdwara – Download the EEOC’s Fact Sheet on Religious Garb and Grooming in the Workplace and share it with your local community.

    2. Contact the Sikh Coalition for Legal Assistance
    – If you believe you may have experienced job discrimination because of your Sikh identity, please contact the Sikh Coalition’s legal team at legal@sikhcoalition.org.

    3. Host a Know Your Rights Forum at Your Gurdwara – If you wish to partner with the Sikh Coalition and host a forum at your gurdwara to discuss your legal rights, please contact the Sikh Coalition’s legal team at legal@sikhcoalition.org.

The Sikh Coalition will continue to share resources in the coming weeks and months, and we welcome your ideas and feedback for making our community more resilient. We recently shared information on reporting hate incidents and protecting your children at school.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
