  • Remember Oak Creek One Month From Today

July 5, 2017 (New York, NY) – In exactly one month, our nation will commemorate the five-year anniversary of the tragedy that took place in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. On August 5, 2012 a gunman walked into a Sikh gurdwara (house of worship) and murdered six, while injuring several more.

For those of you who can make it to Oak Creek in person, we strongly encourage you to attend the annual Chardhi Kala 6k Memorial Run and Walk in Oak Creek on August 5, 2017. The event will be held to honor those injured and in remembrance of those whose lives were taken: Paramjit Kaur Saini, Sita Singh, Ranjit Singh, Prakash Singh, Suveg Singh Khattra and Satwant Singh Kaleka.

If you can’t make it to Oak Creek, we still urge you to either organize or join in one of the many National Day of Seva service projects that are being planned nationwide to #RememberOakCreek. So far, projects are confirmed in Vancouver, Bakersfield, Houston, Cincinnati, New York City, San Francisco and Modesto. We anticipate many more cities joining as we all stand in solidarity with Oak Creek.

It’s not too late to lead your own Day of Seva initiative in your community! Click here for a toolkit and resources to help get you started. If you have any questions about organizing a seva project in your city, please email dayofseva@sikhcoalition.org. We strongly encourage you to organize a project as soon as possible, so that your event is a success!

If you live in Wisconsin or Illinois, we strongly encourage you to travel to Oak Creek to commemorate the anniversary in person rather than organizing a seva project.

As we all continue to work together to combat and prevent hate, we hope you will join us on August 5th to #RememberOakCreek.
