  • Know Your Rights Workshops Make Impact in NYC

July 13, 2017 (New York, NY) - The Sikh Coalition organized two simultaneous Know Your Rights workshops in New York City on June 25th – one at the Sikh Cultural Society Gurdwara and another at the Baba Makhan Shah Lubana Gurdwara.

Sikh Coalition staff and guest presenters addressed hate crime and discrimination prevention, school bullying prevention, gurdwara security and immigrant rights. At a time of increasing hostility toward immigrants and religious minorities in the United States, promoting civil rights awareness and resilience in the Sikh American community is as relevant as ever.

"These workshops are so important for the community because they give us the tools to protect our rights," said General Secretary of the Sikh Cultural Society, Bhupinder Atwal. "I hope that every Sikh in America gets the chance to receive this important training."

These community empowerment workshops were made possible by a generous grant by the Liberty Fund at the New York Community Trust. We are grateful to the funders as well as to our guest presenters: Harpreet Singh Mokha from the U.S. Department of Justice Community Relations Service; Etzion Neuer from the Anti-Defamation League; Gurjot Kaur from the New York City Commission on Human Rights; and Merium Malik from the Malik Law Firm, who represented the South Asian Bar Association.

“We thank the Sikh Coalition and the guest presenters for helping to protect our individual rights on a daily basis and urge our community to remain proactive in seeking out these trainings,” said Mohinder Singh of Baba Makhan Shah Lubana.
