  • Five Ways To #RememberOakCreek

August 4, 2017 (New York, NY) – This Saturday, our nation will commemorate the fifth anniversary of the attack on the Sikh community of Oak Creek, Wisconsin. On August 5, 2012, a neo-Nazi gunman entered a Sikh gurdwara (house of worship) and murdered six worshipers and permanently injured several more. To this day, it remains one of the deadliest acts of violence in an American house of worship in our nation’s history.

In recent weeks, the Sikh Coalition has partnered with the Oak Creek sangat to provide media and communications support to ensure that we all #RememberOakCreek. However, we need your support to amplify these efforts.

    Five Ways To #RememberOakCreek:

    1) Follow us on Facebook for our live stream of commemorative events from Oak Creek. The Chardhi Kala 6K Memorial Run & Walk is this Saturday, and the Oak Creek gurdwara will lead worshipers in prayer on Sunday.

    2) Schedule your own social media posts -- including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram -- on Saturday, August 5th to #RememberOakCreek. We urge you to speak from the heart about what this anniversary means to you, and we have developed several social media graphics to make posting easy. Click on each of the thumbnails below for full-sized, downloadable graphics.

    3) Join us for the #RememberOakCreek Twitter Town Hall at 11am EST today, August 4th. Follow our Twitter handle @sikh_coalition to participate in the conversation. Invite your followers to join by sharing #RememberOakCreek and our town hall infographic.

    4) This weekend, we have National Day of Seva projects to #RememberOakCreek planned in over 20 cities nationwide. Please click here to find the seva (selfless community service) project nearest to you, and contact dayofseva@sikhcoalition.org with any questions.

    5) Tag the Sikh Coalition in your #RememberOakCreek posts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and we will look to amplify your messages of solidarity, education and resilience.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
