Announcing Leadership Transition
August 30, 2017 (New York, NY) - After eight excellent years as the Sikh Coalition’s Executive Director, Sapreet Kaur is stepping down on September 29th to become the Chief Fund Development Officer with the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.
During Sapreet’s stewardship, the organizational budget tripled in size as she added a senior leadership team with more than forty years of combined experience; she also led a plethora of organizational accomplishments that permanently affected the Sikh community and civil rights nationwide.
Under her leadership, the Sikh Coalition passed laws better protecting the rights of millions of workers, fought anti-bullying cases that impacted thousands of children and changed how Sikhism is taught in six states across America. While she successfully led these large-scale initiatives, her lasting legacy is instilling an organizational understanding that this work impacts everybody and every community voice matters. From the emergency responses to the lengthy legal battles, Sapreet has defended the right to be Sikh in all aspects of society.
“Beyond her innumerable accomplishments, I will remember how Sapreet always fought to ensure the Sikh Coalition placed the community's diverse needs at the center of our work,” said Sikh Coalition Board Chair Narinder Singh. “She represented the community at the highest levels but continually sought to give others the chance to lead. Her efforts resulted in the world better understanding Sikhs and our work for justice and sarbat da bhalla.”
As of September 29th, Co-Founder and Board Chair Narinder Singh will serve as Interim Executive Director, as the organization launches a national search to explore the best candidate to fill the Executive Director position. The Sikh Coalition staff, managed by the existing leadership team, will continue to lead out on the high impact advocacy, legal and education work during the transition process.
“Being the Sikh Coalition’s Executive Director has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It has been a privilege, a labor of love and a life-transforming experience,” said Executive Director Sapreet Kaur. “Given the institution we have built together, I am more confident than ever that the Sikh Coalition’s greatest impact is yet to come.”
We thank Sapreet for her exceptional service to the organization and the community, and we look forward to continuing this important work of protecting and advancing Sikh rights in America.
