September 15, 2017 - The Sikh Coalition is excited to share two media and communications developments that will break new ground in educating the American public about the Sikh faith, community and traditions later this year.

In August, the Sikh Coalition had the opportunity to work with producers and Sikh community members to lay the groundwork for an episode of W. Kamau Bell’s United Shades of America that will exclusively focus on the Sikh American community.

Bell, who has previously written and reported on Sikh issues, extensively interviewed Sikh Coalition Social Justice Fellow, Winty Singh and Sikh Coalition Senior Counsel, Harsimran Kaur for the hourlong episode that will air on CNN. Additional interviews were also completed with Yuba City community leader Kash Gill, other Sikh Coalition clients and several other community members from across the United States.

“It’s fantastic to see these sorts of projects happening, and it is exciting to get the chance to play a small part in the process as we all work together to educate Americans about the Sikh community,” said Social Justice Fellow, Winty Singh.

The episode is still being produced and edited, so stay tuned for future updates about when the show will air!

Separately, the Sikh Coalition continues to provide direct support to organizations like Revolutionary Love and Harness to bring Sikh roles and actors to primetime television. In June, we held a national casting call for shows looking for Sikh actors and actresses in New York and Los Angeles, and we are optimistic about being able to share some exciting developments that have come from this work in the very near future.

Both of these initiatives are part of the Sikh Coalition’s long-term communications strategy to raise Sikh awareness locally and nationally. In August 2017, we reached 13 million Americans through our communications work around #RememberOakCreek, and we continue to work tirelessly on proactive media and communications initiatives to raise the Sikh profile in America.
