The Sikh Coalition Alert
February 15, 2018
  • [TAKE ACTION] #JusticeForGurjeet

February 15, 2018 (Quad Cities, IL) - Yesterday, the Sikh Coalition went public on a hate crime case involving Gurjeet Singh, a head granthi (religious community leader) who lives in Northwest Illinois. Gurjeet was driving for Uber on the evening of January 28, 2018, when a male passenger put a gun to his head and demanded to know “which country do you belong to?” and told him “I hate turban people.”

Nearly three weeks later, no arrest has been made and no hate crime charges have been filed. To read more about #JusticeForGurjeet and the full details of his case, click here.

    1. Call the Rock Island Sheriff's Department today.
      (Phone number: 309-794-1230)

Tell Sheriff Gerald Bustos that hate crime charges must be submitted to the State’s Attorney’s Office and an arrest must be made in Gurjeet Singh’s case. If nobody picks up leave a voicemail.
    2. Call the Rock Island County District Attorney’s Office today. (Phone number: 309-558-3250 then press 1 for the criminal division)
Tell Rock Island State’s Attorney John McGehee that local prosecutors have a responsibility to protect Sikhs and other minority communities from bigotry, hate and violence. What happened to Gurjeet should never happen again and hate crime charges must be filed. If nobody picks up leave a voicemail.
    3. Join us on social media and demand #JusticeForGurjeet.
Sample social media post: As someone who respects freedom and justice, Rock Island authorities should make #JusticeForGurjeet their top priority and arrest his attacker & file hate crime charges. Help me take action: http://bit.ly/justiceforGurjeet

In a meeting yesterday with the Sikh Coalition and local community leaders, the Rock Island Sheriff’s Department shared that the investigation will be handed off to the Rock Island County District Attorney’s Office by Friday, February 16th, with no guarantees of an arrest or hate crime charges forthcoming. Your five minutes of action can make all the difference in the outcome of this case.

Hate crimes are not only an attack on an individual, but on an entire community. They make all of us less safe and degrade our democracy. We must work together to ensure that our government acknowledges, investigates, and prosecutes these cases to combat and prevent future hate violence.

The Sikh Coalition continues to provide free legal representation to Gurjeet Singh and will continue to use every form of available advocacy to guarantee that justice is brought in this case.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
