This intensive, week-long workshop (June 17 - June 22) in Washington, DC will train approximately ten outstanding individuals on the same advocacy techniques used by the Sikh Coalition to build grassroots movements and achieve justice.

“This whole week I learned so many new techniques like media training, advocacy training, how to talk to government leaders, and how to engage with government agencies,” said 2017 graduate Jagdeep Sekhon. “I plan on using these resources so I can not only empower myself but also my community.”

These trainings empower Advocates to go back to their communities and drive local media, policy and Sikh awareness initiatives. Since the inception of the Sikh Advocate Academy, 65 Advocates have led or engaged in over 200 advocacy initiatives across the United States, including authoring dozens of op-eds on civil rights issues; appearing on television and radio programs; collecting hundreds of petitions in support of the Sikh Coalition’s Military Campaign; and securing endorsements for civil rights legislation from their elected representatives in the U.S. Congress.

In order to train the best candidates, regardless of financial status, the Sikh Coalition will pay for all expenses of selected applicants including training, travel, hotel and meals. The Academy will also provide attendees with the opportunity to directly apply the skills learned through meetings with congressional offices on Capitol Hill. In return for the training, Sikh Coalition Advocates agree to initiate advocacy efforts in their communities for the following year.

Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a second application round. Please note that we can only accept applications from U.S. residents 18 years or older.
