The Junior Sikh Coalition (JSC) is a student-led initiative designed to inspire Sikh youth, strengthen the communities to which they belong, and help them achieve their leadership potential. JSC engages in leadership trainings, team building workshops, community events and professional conferences, creating change in ourselves and our communities.
“Being a part of JSC during my first two years of college gave me a platform to my express my passion outside of the classroom alongside my peers who had similar values as me,” said JSC alumna Kiranjit Kaur. “The work you do through JSC gives you a sense of pride that you are making a difference in your community.”
The Sikh Coalition is seeking applications for the 2018-2019 year to join a team that is committed to creating real change and has a genuine passion for fighting injustice. We are looking for the next generation of youth leaders who are willing to learn, grow, and play a leadership role in building efforts to strengthen Sikh communities.
You must be a sophomore, junior, or senior in high school, or a college freshman or sophomore to be eligible to apply.
“My daughter has developed strong leadership skills and enhanced communication skills as a result of her participation in the Junior Sikh Coalition program,” said JSC parent Harpreet Kaur. “The program and her interaction with other JSC participants has given her a heightened sense of awareness of the Sikh community, and she is able to think critically about issues we face.”
Since its inception in 2012, the JSC initiative has trained nearly 60 youth community leaders who have educated over 1,300 students on bullying prevention and Sikh awareness. Some noteworthy accomplishments include partnering with the White House on anti-bullying efforts, presenting anti-bullying workshops to hundreds of Sikh youth, participating on panels regarding the impact discrimination has on Sikh communities; building alliances with other youth minority organizations like the Native American Shinnecock Youth; publication of a youth-compiled “Nirbhau Nirvair: Poetry and Art Book” (No Fear, No Enemies); serving free meals (langar) to New York City shelters; and organizing open mic nights.
After the initial applications are screened, qualified applicants will be called for an in-person interview. Selected applicants must also complete a 1-week bootcamp which will be scheduled for the week of July 30 - August 3, and they must be available to attend Camp Chardi Kala, a Sikh summer camp, from August 12 - 19, 2018 (need-based scholarships are available). Applicants must agree to a weekly commitment to JSC throughout the school year including meetings on Sunday.
