  • Honor Oak Creek through National Day of Seva

June 13, 2018 (New York, NY) – This August, the Sikh community will commemorate the sixth anniversary of the August 5, 2012 shooting in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. To honor the chardi kala spirit and resilience of the Sikh community,  the Sikh Coalition is organizing the sixth annual National Day of Seva (selfless community service) event.

The nationwide events will take place on August 4-5, 2018 to honor those injured and in remembrance of those whose lives were taken: Paramjit Kaur Saini, Sita Singh, Ranjit Singh, Prakash Singh, Suveg Singh Khattra and Satwant Singh Kaleka. As the nation remembers Oak Creek, we recognize that preventing and combating hate must remain our top priority.

“National Day of Seva is an opportunity for communities to give back while recognizing the impact that hate has on our society,” said Sikh Coalition Community Development Director Rucha Kaur. “We must never forget what happened in Oak Creek as we continue our shared efforts to make sure it never happens again.”

Last year, 23 cities participated in 24 service projects across the country. The projects included cleaning up parks, providing langar, interfaith engagement, and several local media opportunities. This year, the goal is to make this the biggest and most successful National Day of Seva.

Every year, in the Sikh spirit of eternal optimism, the Oak Creek sangat has organized a Chardi Kala 6K Memorial Walk and Run. Moving forward, the sangat has made the decision to host the Chardi Kala 6K every five years so the Oak Creek event will not happen this year. The next event is scheduled to take place in 2022.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
