  • 2018 Junior Sikh Coalition Deadline Extended

June 25, 2018 (New York, NY) – Due to the high volume of requests, the Sikh Coalition has decided to extend the Junior Sikh Coalition application deadline until July 2, 2018.

The Junior Sikh Coalition (JSC) is a student-led initiative designed to inspire Sikh youth, strengthen the communities to which they belong, and help them achieve their leadership potential. JSC engages in leadership trainings, team building workshops, community events and professional conferences, creating change in ourselves and our communities.

“The Junior Sikh Coalition helped me experience Sikhi under a different lens,” said JSC alumni Almeet Kaur. “I was able to meet new people and sharpen my skills in public speaking and other valuable traits. This program helped me find my identity not only as a Sikh community member, but also as a young woman.”

The Sikh Coalition is seeking final applications for the 2018-2019 year to join a team that is committed to creating change and has a passion for fighting injustice.

You must be a sophomore, junior, or senior in high school, or a college freshman or sophomore to be eligible to apply.

Since 2012, the JSC has trained nearly 60 youth community leaders, who have educated over 1300 students on bullying prevention and Sikh awareness. Some noteworthy accomplishments include: partnering with the White House on anti-bullying efforts; presenting anti-bullying workshops to other Sikh youth; participating on panels; building alliances with other youth minority organizations; publication of a youth-compiled “Nirbhau Nirvair: Poetry and Art Book” (No Fear, No Enemies); serving free meals (langar) to New York City shelters; and organizing open mic nights.

After the initial applications are screened, qualified applicants will be called for an in-person interview. Selected applicants must complete a one week bootcamp from July 30 - August 3, 2018 and they must be available to attend Camp Chardi Kala, a Sikh summer camp, from August 12 - 19, 2018 (need-based scholarships are available). Applicants must commit to weekly JSC meetings. These meetings include Sundays throughout the school year.
