  • It´s Not Too Late To Honor Oak Creek

July 21, 2018 (New York, NY) – On August 5th, our nation will commemorate the six-year anniversary of the tragic gurdwara shooting that took place in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. To honor the chardi kala spirit and resilience of the Sikh community, nationwide National Day of Seva (selfless community service) events will take place on August 4-5, 2018.

It is not too late to sign up to host a Day of Seva event! For details on how to organize an event, click here.

30 communities from coast to coast have already reached out about hosting National Day of Seva projects to #RememberOakCreek. So far, multiple cities have confirmed projects including Orange County, CA; Bakersfield, CA; Los Angeles, CA; San Jose, CA; Boston, MA; Detroit, MI; Charlotte, NC; Lawrenceville, NJ; New York, NY; Cincinnati, OH; Dallas/Fort Worth, TX; and Fairfax Station, VA. We anticipate many more cities joining as we all stand in solidarity with Oak Creek.

“Every year, we have honored the lives lost in Oak Creek by dedicating a day to helping our communities through selfless service,” said Sikh Coalition Community Development Director Rucha Kaur. “Building bridges across interfaith communities remains a critical step in pushing back against rising hate in America.”

If you are unable to host a seva project but would still like to participate, visit our events page to find an existing project that you can join.

Every year, in the Sikh spirit of eternal optimism, the Oak Creek sangat has organized a Chardhi Kala 6K Memorial Walk and Run. Starting now, the sangat has made the decision to host the Chardhi Kala 6K every five years, so the Oak Creek event will not happen this year. The next event is scheduled to take place in 2022.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
