  • New Social Justice Curriculum & Sikh Camps

August 27, 2018 (New York, NY) — The Sikh Coalition is excited to announce our brand new toolkit, The Jyot Curriculum: Empowering Youth through Social Justice, as our team delivers justice-oriented workshops at Sikh camps across the United States.

Click to hear the Sikh camp radio story we facilitated with NPR’s flagship national news show, All Things Considered.

The Jyot Curriculum (jyot meaning light), available for free here, provides tools to engage Sikh youth in workshops around social justice issues, encourages them to participate in community development, and helps them develop crucial leadership skills that will also benefit their academic and professional lives. Our community development team traveled to 13 Sikh camps and delivered workshops to over 600 campers across the country, piloting the Jyot Curriculum. This curriculum includes workshops on religious intolerance, privilege, and campaign development, among others.

“We are proud of this new curriculum, which strives to encourage dialogue and inspire critical thinking,” said Sikh Coalition Community Development Director Rucha Kaur. “We have found this new curriculum engaging and effective at gurmat camps from coast to coast, as we work on putting the Sikh principle of justice into practice.”

Before the workshop on privilege, Central Jersey Sikh Association camper Arshdeep Kaur, age 14, said she only thought about the privileges she does not have. "The workshop opened my eyes to privileges that I do have and how they can be used to advocate for others," said Kaur.

From our work with Sikh camps across the country to our student-led Junior Sikh Coalition program, we strive to inspire Sikh youth, strengthen the communities to which they belong and help them achieve their leadership potential. We would like to thank all the Sikh leaders across America, as we collectively work to educate and empower the next generation.

As always the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
