  • Game-Changing Back to School Toolkit

August 29, 2018 (New York, NY) – As Sikh children return to classrooms nationwide, the Sikh Coalition is excited to announce our first-ever back to school toolkit designed to make it easy for Sikh kids and parents to engage their local educators in every area of Sikh awareness, school bullying and religious rights.

Click here to access the new back to school toolkit, which includes Sikh awareness presentations for parents, anti-bullying brochures, Know Your Rights materials, and additional legal resources that will help protect your children if problems at school arise.

Additionally, the Sikh Coalition is excited to share the first-ever Sikhism Educator’s Guide as part of this toolkit. This guide is explicitly designed as a resource for you to share with teachers in an effort to equip them with lesson plans for teaching Sikhism and provide them with the depth of necessary information regarding the Sikh community, traditions and faith.

“Our priority is to ensure that Sikh children, like all other students, are safe in their classrooms and school curriculums accurately reflect the diversity of our communities. This toolkit is meant to empower parents and youth to further engage with educators in our pursuit of this goal,” said Sikh Coalition Education Director Pritpal Kaur.

The first-ever comprehensive back to school toolkit and Sikhism Educator’s Guide is part of the Sikh Coalition’s multi-year effort to create safe and inclusive classrooms for Sikh students across the country. In May 2018 the Sikh Coalition secured the inclusion of Sikhism in Colorado public schools, making it the seventh state to take this groundbreaking step. The Sikh Coalition also continues to provide free legal aid services for Sikh families that have experienced bullying in schools.

For more information about the back to school toolkit, the Sikhism Educator’s Guide or to discuss opportunities about how the Sikh Coalition can support you or your local community in outreach efforts to educators, please contact education@sikhcoalition.org.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
