  • A Successful CA Sikh Awareness Month!

November 30, 2018 (Los Angeles, CA) - For the seventh consecutive year, California celebrated November as Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month. With community leadership and support, the Sikh Coalition reached Californians across the state through Sikh awareness presentations, proclamations and events.

“The Sikh Coalition is making great strides to educate the United States on who Sikhs are,” said Channpal Singh, principal at Kaur and Singh Academy in Los Angeles. “We, as a community, must make strong efforts to share our heritage and faith with our peers in schools, work and our neighborhoods.”

Throughout the month of November, the Sikh Coalition worked with public officials, educators, gurdwaras, and media outlets to foster Sikh awareness, empowerment and education. This month, several staff and board members also attended the Yuba City Nagar Kirtan, one of the largest gatherings of Sikhs in the United States with an estimated 100,000+ people in attendance. While there, our staff shared legal and educational resources, including our new Back to School Toolkit.

“During these difficult times that challenge the progress our nation has made, it is my hope that we continue the work to further embrace and celebrate our diverse and inclusive communities,” said California State Assemblymember Ash Kalra, who led the state's official designation of Sikh American Awareness and Appreciation Month. “May we use this opportunity to better understand, recognize, and appreciate the rich history and shared principles of Sikh Americans, and rise above hate and intolerance.”

The Sikh Coalition also helped organize Sikh awareness and bullying prevention presentations for over 1,000 Californians, including students, educators and administrators in the Los Angeles Unified School District. These presentations served to combat bullying, raise Sikh awareness and ensure safer school environments.

“My students are so thankful and appreciative of the Sikh Coalition,” said April Risteff, an educator at Chaminade College Preparatory in Los Angeles. “We have a new understanding of Sikhism and are thankful for the opportunity to visit the Sikh gurdwara where we were met with immense hospitality.”

The Sikh Coalition also partnered with the Los Angeles Clippers for the fifth "Sikh Awareness Night" basketball game which included the national anthem performed by Raaginder “Violinder” Singh and other special events. We also launched the Sikh Project photo exhibition at the California Museum in Sacramento, and it's on display through January 2019.

Lastly, on December 2, 2018, the Southern California community will be participating in a firefighter appreciation project. As California continues to address the destruction caused by the state's massive wildfires, community members and Khalsa school children will be taking gift baskets and thank you cards to firefighters.
