March 28, 2019 (New York, NY) – Earlier this month, the Sikh Coalition announced that CBS’s Religion & Culture documentary series will feature multiple faith-based communities – including the Sikh community – and examine religious-based bullying in schools. The 30-minute episode is scheduled to begin airing in regional media markets
across the country and on digital platforms this Sunday, March 31st.
The CBS special, “Religion & Identity in Young America,” will feature multiple Sikh interviews – including New Jersey high school student and former Sikh Coalition legal client Akashdeep Singh, and his mother, Dapinder Kaur; New Jersey community leader Sandeep Singh; and psychologist Muninder Kaur Ahluwalia, Ph.D. The episode will also include Khalsa school students from Guru Nanak Mission Gurudwara’s Sikh Academy for Gurmat Education (SAGE), and the Junior Sikh Coalition.

“Stories of Sikh resilience are rarely told on American television,” said Sikh Coalition Executive Director, Satjeet Kaur. “I am confident that this new CBS documentary highlighting multiple communities’ empowering response to bigotry will inspire our youth.”
In addition to the Sikh community, the CBS episode will also feature stories from Jewish and Muslim communities. The documentary highlights how each religious community helps young people face bigotry with faith and resolve.
Also on March 31st, the Sikh Coalition will join the Guru Nanak Mission Gurudwara in Oakland, New Jersey to host a screening of the CBS episode and a panel discussion on school bullying
, including what happens when the community comes together to tackle the issue first-hand. The event aims to foster a larger conversation within the Sikh community about how religious-based bullying is affecting Sikh children.
“As the father of three Sikh American children and the Director for the Sikh Academy for Gurmat Education, I understand how important it is to address these issues at the forefront because they play a direct role in shaping the religious identity of our children,” said New Jersey community leader Sandeep Singh.

In January 2019, the Sikh Coalition directly pitched CBS with this idea and has been supporting the production team with background resource material and facilitating all of the Sikh interviews. Now, the Sikh Coalition is working to amplify the CBS episode in an effort to engage and educate the larger American public about the Sikh community. This CBS project is part of a multi-year campaign to raise Sikh awareness and enhance public understanding nationwide
