  • [Watch] CBS Documentary Featuring Sikh Stories

March 31, 2019 (New York, NY) – Today, CBS began airing its television special featuring the Sikh community in regional media markets across the country and on digital platforms. In addition to the Sikh story of resilience, the episode also includes the Jewish and Muslim perspectives examining how religious minorities face bigotry with faith and resolve.

The CBS special “Religion & Identity in Young America” features multiple Sikh interviews - including New Jersey high school student and former Sikh Coalition legal client Akashdeep Singh and his mother, Dapinder Kaur; New Jersey community leader Sandeep Singh; and psychologist Muninder Kaur Ahluwalia, Ph.D. The episode also includes Khalsa school students from Guru Nanak Mission Gurudwara’s Sikh Academy for Gurmat Education (SAGE), and the Junior Sikh Coalition.

“The CBS episode provides a critical opportunity to educate Americans about how hate and bigotry affects children in schools,” said Sikh Coalition Executive Director Satjeet Kaur. “We are confident this content will deepen conversations nationwide about how to combat hate with faith, courage and resilience.”

Additionally, the Sikh Coalition will join New Jersey’s Guru Nanak Mission Gurudwara to host a screening of the CBS episode and a panel discussion on school bullying, including what happens when the community comes together to tackle the issue firsthand. The event aims to foster a larger conversation within the Sikh community about how religious-based bullying is affecting Sikh children.

The event will be live-streamed from our Facebook page beginning at 2:30 pm EDT today. Click here to watch the event live from the Guru Nanak Mission Gurudwara.

The Sikh Coalition is leading a multi-year campaign to address the issue of bullying in schools nationwide. This includes launching the first-ever report examining bullying against Sikh children in schools, releasing a comprehensive toolkit for parents and educators to make classrooms more inclusive, and working with policymakers across the country to secure updates in eight state education standards – impacting up to 15 million students. These efforts are joined by a legal department that continues to represent Sikh families in anti-bullying cases and protect Sikh civil rights in our nation’s classrooms.

Since the beginning of this year, the Sikh Coalition has been supporting the CBS production team, pitching the idea, providing background resource material, and facilitating all of the Sikh interviews. This CBS project is part of a multi-year campaign to raise Sikh awareness and enhance public understanding nationwide.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
